Booking
There are two ways to book a quilt in for the longarm quilting service.
Option 1. Get in touch by email to book your quilt in (pay later).
Option 2. Drop your quilt top and backing (labelled with your name and phone number or email) in to My Bearpaw in Edinburgh (Gilmore Terrace). I collect and drop of completed quilts every couple of weeks.
Option 3. Pay in advance. Use the drop down to select your quilt size and add postage if your quilt is to be returned by post (available in the UK only). You will be contacted with next steps (design consultation) once your order has been received.
Design
I'll ask you to complete a form (or we'll do it together on the phone) with a few questions about some of the core aspects of the quilting you require. Based on that form I will share some design options with you (email or online meeting) and agree a quilting plan with you.
My computerised quilting system - Intelliquilter - has thousands of patterns to choose from. Designers include (in alphabetical order): Dave Hudson, Debra Geisler, Deborah Lobban, Donna Kleinke, Intelligent Quilting, Irena Bluhm, Jessica Schick, Judy Lyon, Karen Thomson, Keryn Emmerson, Kim Diamond, Laura Lee Fritz, Linda Lawson, Lisa Calle, Loes can der Heijden, My Creative Stitches, Nancy Hacke, Urban Elementz, and more..
You may have an idea of the exact pantograph you'd like to use. If I don't have it I should be able to get it for you. That cost will pass to you in addition to the cost of your quilting.
An initial consultation helps to narrow down the types of patterns you would like on your quilt (traditional/modern, floral, geometric, seasonal). I'll then send you some pattern and thread options (by email) and we'll agree a plan for your quilt. I want you to be delighted with your quilt - the pattern(s), quilting density, and the thread choice.
Batting
You can supply your own batting or purchase through me. I stock the following options. Specialist batting (e.g. dark coloured or high loft) can be purchased with costs passed on.
Sew Simple 70/30 recycled cotton/poly. Up to 5% shrinkage on first cool wash. £13/m
Sew Simple super soft 100% poly. Up to 2% shrinkage. £11/m
Warm & Natural 100% cotton. Up to 3% shrinkage. 15.50/m
If you're supplying your own batting/wadding, it needs to be 6" bigger than your quilt top e.g. quilt top 40" x 50" needs wadding 46" x 56"
Quilt preparation
Backing fabric should be a minimum of 6" inches wider and 8" longer than your quilt top e.g quilt top 40" x 50" (width x length) needs backing fabric 46" x 58". If your quilting is dense, allow 8" e.g quilt top 40" x 50" (width x length) will need backing fabric 48" x 58".
Your quilt top and backing should be squared off - equal dimensions at top and bottom of the quilt top (length and width).
No basting!
Check and clip your threads on the back of your quilt top. Dark threads under light fabric may show when quilted.
If it's not obvious, pin a piece of paper to the top of your quilt top and backing fabric 'top'!
If dropping your quilt at MyBearpaw, ensure everything is in one bag marked with your name, email and phone number.
Genuinely no quilt police here! That said, I will check your quilt carefully and let you know if there areas that represent a specific risk. I will clip occasional stray/dark threads if I think they might show. If the whole quilt needs a significant level of attention I'll let you know in advance as there will likely be a cost associated with this.
You quilt will be folded 'as is' off the machine.
Quilt completion
You will receive a call and email once your quilt is complete. Once your payment has been received we can arrange collection or postage to you.
I will aim to complete your quilt as soon as possible but you should expect a 4 week turnaround time from receipt of your quilt top and backing. If it's for a special occasion and you're short of time, let me know and I'll will certainly see if I can juggle things to accommodate you.
